AU Attorney-General Message to Curious Australians Ignoring Dangers

AuFEDERAL Attorney-General Robert McClelland says police and emergency services may be used to clear people off the beaches during future tsunami warnings, after last weekend’s warning was largely ignored by the public.

Mr McClelland has ordered a review of the public response to tsunami warnings after lifesavers struggled to clear beaches on the New South Wales and Queensland coast following the earthquake that struck Chile on February 27.

As people across the South Pacific headed for the hills on Sunday fearing giant waves, Australian swimmers, surfers and looky loos did the opposite and flocked to the beach. Scores of people ignored warnings of dangerous currents at Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach and dipped into the water, and hundreds rushed to seaside outlooks to watch for giant waves. Tsunami hits NZ: Harbour ‘like a washing machine’

NZ_TsunamiA tsunami surge of water measuring one metre has reached Northland, turning the normally plaid harbour into a "washing machine".

 

"The wave was approximately one metre. It sucks out and comes in. It takes a couple of minutes. They are very long waves," said Jeroen Jongejans from his boat near the harbour entrance.

Queensland Australia Tsunami Alert Sunday 28th Feb

Could Reach Our Shores Here on the Gold Coast around 8:15am (EST) Sunday 28th Feb

Queensland_Tsunami_Alert

Possibility of dangerous waves, strong ocean currents and foreshore flooding for several hours from 08:15 am (EST) Sunday.

Tsunami waves are more powerful than the same size beach waves, with the first
wave not always the largest. First tsunami effects are expected as follows:

 

 

Coolangatta after 08:15 am (EST) Sunday
Maroochydore after 09:00 am (EST) Sunday
Brisbane after 09:15 am (EST) Sunday

 

"Advice from the bureau is that there is the possibility of dangerous waves, strong ocean currents and foreshore flooding for several hours tomorrow morning," Acting Deputy Chief Officer Wayne Coutts said.

 

"Please do not be tempted by curiosity and consider safety first."

 

Emergency Management Queensland has systems in place to deal with such events and further updates will be issued if the situation changes.
