A powerful earthquake has rocked Christchurch, and aftershocks are ongoing. The power appears to have been knocked out across much of the city. The quake has been felt through much of the South Island. It struck just before 5am this morning.

It was felt widely across the South Island, including Christchurch and Timaru, and there have also been reports of the quake being felt as far as Wellington. Several aftershocks have been felt. Witness Colleen Simpson said everyone was out in the street in their pyjamas looking scared and worried. There was no power and the mobile network was failing.

Radio NZ reports power off to most of Christchurch. Orion says many substations down, sewer and water pipes ruptured.. Reports of looting on Colombo St. (not confirmed )

The center of the quake was 41 miles (66 km) deep and it struck at 1635 GMT. Christchurch, on the east coast of the South Island, is New Zealand’s second-largest city with a population of about 342,000 people.

Dr Mark Quigley is a lecturer in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch. He has just reported that witnesses told him the Avon River in Avonside overflowed its banks in places due to a surge in the river caused by the massive earthquake which hit Christhchurch at 4.30am today. He said there are cracks in parts of the roads and gardens around Avonside measuring 20cms across and up to 1 metre deep.Dr Quigley told RadioLive that the force of the quake had pushed up sand and dirt in mounds in parts of Avonside.

Indonesia has issued a tsunami alert after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck near the province of Aceh.

The site is very close to that of the 2004 earthquake that triggered the Indian Ocean tsunami, which killed about 220,000 people.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no destructive widespread tsunami threat following the earthquake. “However, there is the possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a hundred kilometers from the earthquake epicenter,” it said.

The quake struck offshore, 214km (133 miles) south-east of the provincial capital of Banda Aceh, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Some 620,000 people live within 100 kilometers of the epicenter.

FEDERAL Attorney-General Robert McClelland says police and emergency services may be used to clear people off the beaches during future tsunami warnings, after last weekend’s warning was largely ignored by the public.

Mr McClelland has ordered a review of the public response to tsunami warnings after lifesavers struggled to clear beaches on the New South Wales and Queensland coast following the earthquake that struck Chile on February 27.

Today, Mr McClelland introduced a tsunami information program in conjunction with Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) to educate the public of the very real dangers of tsunamis.

It was "disappointing but understandable" that so many people travelled to beaches to view the waves last Sunday, Mr McClelland said.

"People saw the earthquake of course literally thousands of kilometres away and didn’t appreciate the dangers," he said.

As people across the South Pacific headed for the hills on Sunday fearing giant waves, Australian swimmers, surfers and looky loos did the opposite and flocked to the beach. Scores of people ignored warnings of dangerous currents at Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach and dipped into the water, and hundreds rushed to seaside outlooks to watch for giant waves. In New Zealand, largely unscathed from the Samoa tsunamis, people were in no hurry to take precautions, with emergency services reporting sightseers, surfers and swimmers heading for the water in areas that were being evacuated. more

A tsunami surge of water measuring one metre has reached Northland, turning the normally plaid harbour into a "washing machine".

"The wave was approximately one metre. It sucks out and comes in. It takes a couple of minutes. They are very long waves," said Jeroen Jongejans from his boat near the harbour entrance.

He said the water was discoloured indicating the energy level of the wave was very deep and had picked up debris from the harbour floor…more
