Google Alters Buzz to Tackle Privacy Flaws

Google Alters Buzz to Tackle Privacy Flaws By MIGUEL HELFT Google moved quickly to contain a firestorm of criticism over Buzz, its new social network, taking the unusual step of announcing changes to the product over the weekend to address privacy problems.

Late Saturday, Todd Jackson, product manager for Gmail and Google Buzz, wrote in a blog post that Google had decided to alter one of the most vehemently criticized features in Buzz: the ready-made circle of friends that Buzz gives new users based on their most frequent e-mail and chat contacts. Now, instead of automatically connecting people, Buzz merely suggests to new users a group of people that they may want to follow or want to be followed by.

Facebook Killer? Google aims to take on Facebook with new Gmail and Phone social feature called ‘Buzz’

Google BuzzThe Internet giant held a press conference at its Mountain View, Calif., headquarters Tuesday to show off "Buzz," which incorporates social media tools such as photo and video sharing and status updates in Gmail. Google Buzz will also be accessible on mobile phones. And Google will launch Buzz for businesses.

Google vice president of product management Bradley Horowitz, vice president of engineering Vic Gundotra, and product manager Todd Jackson were on hand to show it off. The tagline for Google Buzz is "a Google approach to sharing."

The new service has five features, Jackson said. You will automatically follow the people you e-mail and chat with on a regular basis. You will be able to share content from around the Web, including YouTube videos, Flickr photos, site links and others. You will be able to share your thoughts in a public way and in a private way. You will get social updates in your inbox. And Google will help you find only the stuff that matters by recommending popular content. The mobile version of Buzz can figure out where you are and show you nearby buzz posts.

Google Buzz, which launches Tuesday, will also be accessible on mobile phones. And Google will eventually also debut a version of Buzz for businesses.

Google May Pull Out of China, Threatens to UNFILTER RESULTS!

Google launched its Chinese-language search engine Google.cn in 2006

China GoogleWide Cyber Attack Is Linked to China

Chinese Hackers possibly used Adobe Reader flaw…

Google said it is "reviewing the feasibility of our business operations in China" and may back out of China entirely and un-filter results! As it disclosed it had been hit with major cyberattacks it believes to have originated from China…

From the Google Blog:

“ These attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered–combined with the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the web–have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China. We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China. “  GoogleBlog
